The History of Opium

The earliest recorded reference to opium dates back to 55 hundred years ago, when poppies were cultivated in lower mesopotamia. The sumerians called the opium poppy holgil, meaning the joy plant. Ancient egyptians began cultivation of opium for use, not just as a way to get high, but medically, for use as a pain killer. They began trading opium with other civilizations like the phoenicians and menoans who then further traded i around the mediterranean,. into greece, carthage, europerest. Everybody wanted that sweet, sweet opium, of course they did.
