Is This a Microcytic Anemia?

The patient was admitted to the medicine service for further evaluation and management of her anemia in symptoms. Iron studies revealed an iron level of 13 micrograms per deciliter, with an iron saturation of 3.6%. Her ferritin was 109 nanograms per millivir. Given these findings, they discussed blood transfusions with the patient. She would not consent to blood transfusions; she did receive IV iron.
