Under the status quo, where it comes to competing for top jobs or income, men are typically more likely to compete for prestige. Women face backlash, hostile backlash, from others when they're seen as self-interested. And therefore they can lose allies, which might be important for them. So by acting nice, or women can mitigate that apotiness.
