With the Maya as it's such a long stretching area, people imagine if we look at another society or another region, somehow it's going to be completely different. We love to seize on the ways in which they were different without accepting that if we were to go back in time, the differences that we would find and be struck by would be more question of time and not region. And I always make the argument that I think if you then had a choice, you now stuck back in the year 1000, where do you want to be? But that might just be a kind of romantic bias on my part.
