The New Poetics

A new world had been ushered in by the new electronic technologies beginning with the telegraph. Poets began to speak of a deragelomond de toulissant and dislocation into meaning. Taking his cue from the poetics of the previous hundred years, McLuhan approached technologies of communication as environmental poems that distort, imperfect, and shift our sensibilities. To be understood then, media had to be read and studied as poems were read and studied.
