A team based at the University of Southampton has designed a very clever lab that can take a whole range of environmental measures, but right down at the bottom of the sea. Professor Matt Mullum is in charge of making sensors embedded in a small perspex disc inside a sealed tube that goes in the water. From there it autonomously harvests a whole load of ultra sensitive chemistry and biochemistry from the sea bed. These mini labs are plugging into a Europe-wide project called Sense Ocean and can be deployed on existing ocean monitoring hardware such as ARGO which is a global network
