The Role of Rods and Cones in the Retina

The retina is a camera plus an image processing module that re-represents the signal so it can be transmitted efficiently to a variety of targets in the brain. The rods and cones are two type of, let's call them pixel detectors. Mainly we use our rods at night and we use our cones in the daytime. We don't have a complete understanding of how all that works, but we know a fair bit about what kinds of stuff they do to the visual signal.
