Why God Allows Innocent People to Suffer
Quinus writes in his commentary on Job, and this is the first text text one on the handout. They tell Job that he must have done something really terrible to have deserved all the suffering which he received. It seems reasonable that the innocent who are not guilty of their own sins should not be afflicted with any other punishment besides the death which is due to original sin. Doesn't it seem unfair that bad things often happen to good people? That's what Aquinas wants to try to answer in this work.
