The property requirements that men had to meet in order to be enrolled in the legions were fast becoming unattainable. One of the most important consequences this had for the republic was the make-up of its army. The Senate, which had risen to a state of political preeminent during the long years of the Second Punic War, was death to the ill winds that were blowing. Each senator was caught up in their own quest for personal glory.
