In 14 79, ferdinand's father died and he became king of aragon. He and isabella ruled castile and aragon together as co monarchs. But critically, the two realms were not otherwise united. Most iberian kingdoms and principalities had by this point developed permanent political councils called qartes that functioned a lot like french estates general.
