The Suttonhu Battle Helmet
It was, it may have functioned as a real battle helmet. It has damage and repairs on the back flap where it may have been struck in battle. The style of the decoration on the helmet seems to be rather old for the suttonhu burial. That might mark or symbolize, i would argue, a transition away from the more pagan and shamonic beliefs that the helmet symbolized. And so in this way, sutton ho was not only sending off this particular king, but it was sending off the sort of symbols and accoutrements of a particular form of kingship that was no longer current.
