Sewage pumping stations were an entirely new building type. In London's waste was now effectively moved downstream. The liquids were primed with chemicals to remove the smell. Solids were segregated and put on sludge boats, which were dumped in the North Sea. A European directive said that this stuff should no longer be dumped in theNorth Sea. Thameswater then created a new system whereby the solids and the liquids, again, are separated. And the solids are incinerated and turned into ash, which is used for making breeze blocks.
