There's a lot of value to be gained from nuclear reactors, which are carbon free and scalable. But we regulated them into oblivion in the 80s because of this scary stories people had in their minds. The Chernobyl TV series probably got every award you can get but it certainly didn't do anything to help people get more excited about building nuclear reactors.
