Richard cromwell, son of King Charles II, took over after his father's death. He tried to mediate between the different contending parties in the country and come to some new consensus. But this only then inflame s these army officers who feel that they're the ones who successfully won the war and are entitled to govern the country. They don't accept richard cromwell as having any right to rule. So he steps down after only nine months in power. Royalists then take this as an opportunity to revolt. And a puritan officer named john lambert successfully puts down this revolt.
