The Ghost of the Gnat
Within the context of the story, maybe it's justified, right? So, yes, he gets this piece of wood, beats the snak into a bloody pulp. Then later the the shepherd goes to sleep again, and the ghost of the gnat appears. It comes to him in a dream, and the gnat chews him out for not being grateful. And the shepherd wakes up, and he feels remorse for what he's done. And he builds a tomb in honour of thegnat, and then decorates the tomb with flowers and fruit.
