Ricky Gervais: A Great Comedy Writer and Actor
Ricky Gervais was using the atheist audience as a test bed to try out ideas and see just how far he could go. His comedy frequently gives a fence, not least in his splendidly irreverent takedowns of Hollywood celebs. If there was a Golden Globe for seeing how far you can go and just getting away with it, Ricky would win hands down. Perhaps my favourite of all his shows is Derek, where Ricky plays a supremely kind and gentle half-wit. As for afterlife, it almost had me in tears. It's so movingly clever.
