The Definition of Religion in the New Testament

My question is about the term religion and a conversation with my dad. And he says, well, there's no reference to religion. In fact, they talked down upon religion. So let's take them in order. Is religion ever referenced by that word? Definitely it is. Several times the most,. probably the most well known of the mentions is in James chapter one. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but to see his heart, this man's religion is in vain.
