It is very common to see recomposition that occurs depending on overall energy status. Recomposition tends to be very accessible for people who are either weight neutral or having modest changes in body weight. If you're absolutely shredded your likelihood of losing fat and being able to support muscle gain at the same time is going to be severely inhibited. A meta-analysis a while ago found deficits were not particularly helpful as we would expect for building muscle because it's an energy intensive process.
