Flight controllers were like a team of earth based co pilots for the Apollo spacecraft. They tracked and monitored the spacecraft through every second of the mission. The last voice was Capcom or the capsule communicator, Charlie Duke relaying the go decision by radio to Armstrong and Aldrin. Here he is in an interview about Apollo 11 talking fondly about his flight controllers.
