Are There Other Advantages of a Run-in Period?
The run-in period allows you to preserve your ability to do an intention to treat analysis while increasing the chance that patients included in that analysis will actually be adherent. If we have a trial with poor adherence and it leads to an inconclusive, non-significant result, because you've lost that adherence, then you've wasted time,. You've wasted money, you've wasted the goodwill of the participants. So there are several other advantages of actually including a run-in periods before patients are randomized.
