This chapter explores the multiple factors that contribute to overweight and obesity, including energy intake, physical activity, social economic status, education, genetic factors, epigenetic effects, and alterations in the gut microbiome. It also presents five major proposed mechanisms for weight gain and discusses the dietary causes and management strategies for each one.
