What Are the Heavens Made Of?

The ancients did not really have the means of answering this question in a way that we moderners would consider to be scientific or even really plausible. So these three questions occupy astronomers for millennia. Number one, how do you keep time? Number two, how do the planets move? And number three, what are the heavens made of and what's their relationship to the earth?
