Is the German Car Industry Fading?

The auto industry is the center of the German economy. But from what I can tell, it seems to be falling behind in terms of developing electric cars. Does this mean the German auto industry is screwed in some fundamental way? And if the German car industry fades, what does that mean for the German economy as a whole? It's really an interesting exercise. The crucial thing about it is that they produce spin-off effects. They're technologically dynamic and big exporters. So in all of those respects, they punch above their weight.
