I think the stresses and strains of the process, no matter where you stood, left absolutely no one feeling happy about it. I doubt even people that had dramatic successes in some ways gave them any reason to feel sort of nostalgic or look back on the experience positively. The anti-austerity movement could fail, but you knew, we didn't know at the time, but you can look back and say, well that created the conditions for Corbynism. But there wasn't some kind of great creation of human material in the same way as there was with the austerity movement. To pin all of this on Stalinism though would miss something. A lot of it wasn't really leftwing Stalinism
