The Princely States of India

After 18 57, every single royal family served the british. All these kingdoms were then given the name of princely states by the bittish. There there would be a british collector, also a collector of money. Even to day, in india, there is a position of district collector. My question is, what does the district collector collect? Why is that person still called a collector? why can't you call him or her a district administrator or district magistrate?
