The Enuma Elish
The Enuma Elish is an ancient Babylonian story of creation, preserved on tablets found in the library of Asha Banipal. From its archaic language and script, the story must be centuries older, dating from 1900 to 1500 BC. In these very earliest verses we see remnants of the Old Mesopotamia religion that was so preoccupied with the vasty deep, the terrifying ocean. But the translation I like best is the evocative one from the shock and Bible. The translator rewrites the first verbs.
