From OAU to AU: Challenges and Progress

This chapter analyzes the evolution of the African Union from its predecessor, the Organization of African Unity, and evaluates its mixed successes over twenty years. It discusses the AU's ambitious aims for peace and trade, while also addressing the numerous setbacks and conflicts that have hindered its effectiveness. The chapter critically examines Ethiopia's pivotal role and the AU's struggles to maintain authority amid increasing member state interests and ongoing crises.
