The Apocalypse and Its Responses
In 16 66, the great fire broke out and swept through and destroyed most of central london. So in this way, conflict, disease and other disasters like fire and famine could feed one on the other. At certain times, people felt that they were probably witnessing the apocalypse. A lot of art and literature from this time uses imagery of the four horsemen of the apocalypse: famine, pestilence, war and oppression. In this environment, people looked for responses to try to restore some sense of order and stability to the world. These responses were sometimes practical and sometimes ideological.
