Esther Wong and the Hong Kong Cafe
Esther didn't talk very openly about why she didn't like the Hong Kong Cafe, so it was assumed that it was just sheer territorialism on her part. It then snowballed when Esther's then promoter instituted a three to four week cooling period for bands that played the Hong Kong. This policy, along with the fact that Esther stopped booking punk bands, gave her a reputation for being vindictive. She also drew a line in the sand in central plaza. On one side of the courtyard was Esther Wong and her skinny tie wearing new wave bands. And on the other was the Hong Kong and the punks.
