The Rise and Fall of Rome
At this point in history, Carthage was a contender that basically dominated the Western Mediterranean. Almost because across the water in the Italian peninsula, Rome was also rising to power. It wasn't until the 6th century when those villages started to coalesce into what we think of as a city. What's surprising about Rome's growth is that it nearly got wiped out on several different occasions.
