The Misconception of the Maya Language
Maya is a Yucatek Maya word. It's not clear exactly its origins and what it initially referred to. We modern peoples have used the term to create a civilizational area that encompasses what we call the Maya peoples. In the 20th century in response to discrimination against Maya peoples, particularly in Guatemala, but also in Mexico to some extent in Belize and Honduras, a Pan-Maya movement was created. And that was created by Maya peoples. So to say, okay, use this identity to us and now we're going to use it to pursue our rights and defend ourselves.
