Catholic petitioners came forward too, asking for free use of their religion. And were initially mildly encouraged when james told them he would not use extremity if they continued in duty like subjects. James's attitude to the religion of his subjects was to demand obedience to the monarchy as the most important requirement and their souls were up to them. He was much more opposed to executions than elizabeth as well,. So i think only 25 people were executed specifically for religion in his reign.
