Last year, natural gas accounted for 38% of US power generation and consumed 36.8% of the nation's total gas supply. The cost of meeting air quality standards has made coal less economically viable as a power source in the United States. In Europe, the percentage of electricity generated by natural gas is somewhat lower with natural gas filling at 24% of electricity generation needs in 2020. But there may be ongoing dependence on natural gas as an emergency backup for hydroelectric power.
