What Happened Next With the Barber Surgeons?
In paris, barber surgeons continued to gain status and recognition in the thirteenth century. At the same time, degree renting colleges began to confer surgical degrees. The physicians were unhappy about this and formed alliances with the barber surgeons. And then the barbers wanted more independence, and the physicians withdrew their support. Ultimately, in the seventeenth century, the surgeons capitulated, and medicine officially engulfed surgery as a profession. After this point, the barber surgeon cohort, which had been rapidly expanding, lost their medical clout and took a turn for the worse. Gradually they declined in quality, influence and popularity.
