Is There a Bias in the Algorithm?

A lot of the media conversation has been focused around sort of these questions of bias and accusations of racism. The algorithm in question, compass, said that they were basically optimizing towards a definition of fairness where a six on their one to ten risk scale, and then the same thing for an African American and for a white American. It seems as far as we can tell that that it is true, but then if, you know, one based demographic has a higher recidivism rate on average, then it's just mathematically inevitable that they will also have a higher false positive rate because you're just kind of changing the denominator and that ratio.
