The Gift of the Holy Ghost
As long as Jesus was with his disciples, there was not a full need for them to have the constant companionship of the spirit. But because of the vital role that the spirit would play later in their growth development and the expansion of the early Christian church, Jesus said, it is expedient for you that I go away. When he leaves, then the gift of the Holy Ghost will be manifest among the people that follow Jesus.
