Is There a Welfare State Trap on a Secessionist Level?
There is a thought by many that in a globalized world, being a smaller, independent nation makes a lot of political and economic sense. So as the the world gets more global ized economically speaking, we might actually see that it gets less globalized politically speaking or starts to fragment more politically speaking. If you can trade with the rest of the world as a small country, maybe you don't need to be part of a big country in order to have access to a large internal market. It's that multilateral trading order that makes secession more valuable nowadays. Yo need things like the world trade organization, or nafta, or the european union for stability.
