The Importance of Aesthetic Purity
Aristotle's theory of art is that it induces identification and catharsis, which chiller would say is not properly aesthetic. But as Shiller reported, if you do have all that seductive material, there is a triumph in overcoming it. Art can be all the more perfect if it shields the quote unquote liberty of the soul, even after this violent emotional storm. There's something about being subjected to art that produces all these passions in us, and then also produces that feeling of distance on top of it. The contrast between those two things can create a sort of sublimity.
