Is the Amygdala Associated With Anxiety?

Severe anxiety such as generalized anxiety disorder can occur in an individual who has an exaggerated response to such situations. A little almond sized brain region called the amygdala has been shown to be crucial in the development and expression of conditioned fear through a central fear system. This entire system is responsible for processing and mediating fear and anxiety. How do we know this? Researchers from the Yale University School of Medicine were able to activate the amygdala by inserting an electrode into the brain and electrically stimulating that brain region.
