The History of Privateering
The merchant marine tended to be a diverse cross-section of early American society. On ships, you'd find African-Americans, indigenous Americans, white Americans and people from Asia that is once United States started trading directly with Asia. There were quite a few black men who were on privateers, some were enslaved people who had escaped and wanted their freedom,. Others were rented out by the masters, quote-unquote, onto these privateers.
