Mary's function in those scenes is different than Mary's function in the ending scene. People have connected the the print on her her shirt looks very much like a kind of parasitic fungus. I think that it's possible that mind control could also be an allegory for sort of Mary taking over the narrative she does take over the narrative at the end of the series or the season.
