Linnaeus and the North American Monarch
Linnaeus initially put all butterflies in the genus papilio, but that changed over time. You will also see the north american monarch specifically referred to as the subspecies de nousee pus plexipus. Linnaeus noted in his writing that he had chosen the names using the sons of the greek mythological figure egyptus.

Monarch butterflies are still in the middle of their story – and it’s one that is precarious. Humans are still trying to figure out a lot about them, and aspects of the monarch story have been misrepresented over the years.
