Science Is More Than a Career, Right?

i wonder about how science would have advanced differently if we had a different oportion of, for lack of a better word, career scientists. Right now, the barrier to entry to advancing the field is very high,. If you're not affiliated with a university, it's hard to figure out how to publish stuff. So i would like to acsimila alternate futures where you vary the mix of a, you know, career and lab work. That's the premise of citizen science. I think there's some hopeful siecantating e-paper that i wrote up back on this topic awhile ago.
