The Second Vatican Council
Monsignor John Strinkowski was a student of theology in Brooklyn, New York when Pope John XXIII made the somewhat surprise announcement. It had been nearly a century since the last Ecumenical Council. The first Vatican Council took place in 1870 and this now is called the second Vatican Council because of that. More than 2,000 cardinals and bishops from all parts of the world arrive here in the Piazza.
