I saw in a New York newspaper. one of those two great door guardians at Nara with swordsthose fierce looking door guardians. Under the picture was this legend the Japanese worship gods like this. And then it occurred to me not they but we worship a god like that because our God the one who stays in the cherubim that you shouldn't pass. The Buddha dispelled him by being absolutely immobile and then touching earth and earth touching posture so that the goddess earth herself said this is my beloved son, there's no one here go away you.
