The Evolution of Female Vocal Folds
Research shows lower pitch voices for both men and women receive higher ratings on dominance, authority, competence and even trustworthiness scales. Women have a double bind when it comes to their voice: To be taken seriously in the professional workplace, you have to have a lower voice; but to be feminine, to be attractive, you must have a higher voice. The use of vocal fry is becoming more prevalent among young women as urban and professional speakers often don't like it.
