The Evolution of Archaeology in the 20th Century
i would argue that archaeology gradually evolved in the 18 and early 19 hundreds into what we think of now as archaeology. You can see this change over from antiquarianism to archaeology as part of a broader shift in thinking, which happened gradually in the 18 hundreds. This new archaeology developed largely as a partf or an extension of imperialism, the desire to understand and control and describe societies overseas.
