The Importance of Benevolence in a Civil War
There seems to be some important lesson here about benevolence in victory and particularly in victory in a civil war. Ulysses S. Grant says, I will resign from the Union army if you go forward with this plan to prosecute Robert E. Lee because I gave him my word at Appomattox. And he might not have surrendered had I not given him that promise.
