The History of Hawaii

In 1943, the Army announced that Japanese men between the ages of 18 and 45 could volunteer. In Hawaii alone, nearly 10,000 volunteers overwhelmed small recruitment centers. More than 2,600 were accepted, and most would become part of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. It took another 13 years before Hawaii would gain statehood due to lingering resistance in Congress.
