I feel very fortunate because I have found what works for me personally before a big race or a workout. And frankly, I like to, like you just described, almost distract myself right before the workout or the race. But then as soon as the gun goes off and the race begins or the workout starts, I'm so very intently focused on the task at hand. So it's kind of finding the range that works for you that tends to be what works for most people, but that range has to be individualized.
